Country Projects

The Greening Transportation Infrastructure Development (GRID) Integrated Program aims to advance the transition toward sustainable transportation infrastructure that safeguards, conserves, and restores key coastal, marine, and terrestrial ecosystems. Five countries are executing projects under the program: Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines, Suriname, and Ukraine.

Malaysia

The Ministry of Transport and Maritime Institute of Malaysia is integrating biodiversity into port infrastructure planning and development, demonstrating that nature-based solutions (NbS) mitigate risks and enhance biodiversity and leveraging greater public and private investments in NbS for resilient infrastructure. The project is implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). (GEF ID: 11469)

Nepal

The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport and Ministry of Forest and Environment is collaborating with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) as the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Agency to promote the well-being of the Terai Arc Landscape through conservation, forest and land management, and socioeconomic strategies. The project will also develop green transportation design principles that enhance natural capital assessments and awareness of international practices. (GEF ID: 11470)

The Philippines

The Department of Public Works and Highways and Department of Transport (DoTr) are working to integrate biodiversity and NbS in future transportation investments based on an extensive pipeline under the ADB-supported Infrastructure Preparation and Innovation Facility (IPIF). Work will also be supported in the Caraga region of Mindanao through integrated, inclusive planning. The project aims to influence proposed investments under the IPIF to advance infrastructure that integrates climate and ecosystem biodiversity. The project is implemented by ADB. (GEF ID: 11471)

Suriname

The Ministry of Public Works and Spatial Planning is working to integrate biodiversity into port infrastructure planning and development in the lower part of the Suriname River, including its estuary. The project will also promote nature-positive solutions in policies, guidelines, and legislation related to infrastructure planning and design and leverage sustainable financing to increase resiliency. The project is implemented by WWF. (GEF ID: 11472)

Ukraine

The Ministry for Communities, Territories, and Infrastructure Development and Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources are joining with WWF-Ukraine on integrated planning and design processes for a major international highway. The project will also conduct a detailed ecological analysis to minimize habitat impacts, forest degradation, and species loss. The project is implemented by UNEP. (GEF ID: 11468)
